So I realized with the 328i become the 330i with its 2.0L TT engine. And the 335i becoming the 340i with its 3.0L TT engine. The 320i right now with its 2.0L engine and its proper name will have to be made wrong into the 310i.

I guess the number 20 is too plebeian. Now, not only do 3s turn into 5s, but the larger numbers also carry over.

Only issue is that all North American market "is" models have been coupes or convertibles. Though I think everyone's quite okay with the 320is BMW did sell at one point (even if the current "328" would be a sad substitute).

I think it's because car people are logical people. It doesn't make logical sense in their naming scheme based on what the numbers normally could be interpreted as. It makes our brains hurt to try to keep this straight. Pre 2005ish BMW's were able to to see what the engine size was by the model. Post 2006ish, they started using the numbers to mean different things, now they are using the numbers to mean yet something else. It's a matter of car buffs trying to keep the info straight in thier head.

The thing is, this isn't new. The displacement hasn't always been a perfect match to the badge even going as far back as the 1980s.
